Just wanted to give a shout out to a couple guys that went out of their way to help me with getting parts to fix my car after a heartbreaking fire at VIR.

Nick Belling at Geartronics got everything I needed partswise and then was available at any hour to help me get things back to 100%. Even did a remote systems check to just make sure everything was calibrated properly. Nick was truly concerned and wanted to do whatever it took to get me going.

Mike Devins at Hurley Race Products built me an engine cover based on some old moulds that were given to him. He got right on it after we spoke and he got me a part with enough time for me to get it fitted. Just a great guy with great service for sure.

Our racing group is small and I'm just so thankful there are guys like these who make it possible to do what we love. Without their passion, things would be much, much tougher for us to enjoy ours.

Rounds 5 and 6 of the US Formula 1000 Championship East at Road Atlanta are just days away!

A full field of 15 cars is entered, with Glenn Cooper leading the way. After a sweep at VIR, Cooper has a healthy lead over Nicholas Ortiz and Richard Franklin. Race 1 winner Lawrence Loshak and multiple national champion JR Osborne both return to the series after being absent at VIR, and both look to chip away at Cooper’s lead. Round 3 and 4 podium winners Alex Mayer and Alastair McEwan are also hoping to capitalize on their success at VIR to close the point gap.

Thank you to the F1000 organization and Road Atlanta for allowing F1000 a great two race schedule for the weekend.

My weekend could have been much worse and could have been better.

Saturday weather turned out great and our late afternoon race for me ranks up there as one of those races you never forget and a race where you earn respect as a race car driver. Alex Mayer is not only an excellent race car driver, but a guy you can go wheel to wheel every lap with clean racing. We raced hard for 18 laps and passed some times twice each lap. He came out on top and his podium finish was well deserved and earned when it counted. It was an exciting race and my brother/friends were in turn five and said people were cheering on the hill as we battled to the end. We were pulled aside at impound and were informed we would be logged as having car to car contact twice as was reported by the corner workers. We looked at our cars and Alex had a few minor front nose scuff marks that did not scratch the paint or damage his graphics, so I call it great precision driving on his part. I told the steward we had a clean race and at no time did I feel car to car contact from behind. Bottom line, Alex drove a great race and was also the rain master in Sundays down pour race. He may have won with a few more laps. Congrats! When I get to look at the video I will report how many times we switched positions.

We had a new aero package on our car and much different set up so it was somewhat a test weekend for us. We had a front wing failure on test day in the last session and had to cobble together a replacement. Then in Q1 early in the session we were hit by a FV in T6 which was ridiculous. Her right front wheel hit mid car and destroyed my side pod and bent the left rear wheel. The corner was waving a pass flag frantically and I drove right down her mirror line of sight and she was not under any pressure. She drove a wide entry and came down hard on me. Even her peripheral vision did not kick in. I continued on and Qualified P2 but JR and Lawrence were not on track and after Q2 ended I ended up P4. In the other Q I was still P4 dealing with a loose car. We found we had a tow out on the LR of 5MM due to the FV accident. I had to skip the 3 Q on Saturday and assumed the toe out was the loose problem. It was not and in the race with Alex I had a loose car that had me drive with everything I had to hang on. If I had known we would have made additional changes to fix the loose problem.

Sunday race in the rain when bad to worse. We started P3 and Alex got by and then spun and then at bottom of turn 10 on lap one my fuel quick disconnect fell off. So my race was done in lap one.

So we enjoyed the weekend and will make some changes and repairs and look forward to the rest of the year.

Congrats to Lawrence on rebounding with two wins after blowing a motor and fire damage on test day.

Lawrence Loshak skipped rounds 3 and 4 at VIR but returned to the US Formula 1000 Championship East presented by Hoosier Racing Tires, Sunoco Race Fuels, George Dean Racing Engines, Jongbloed Racing Wheels, Hyperco, LS Motorsports, and Geartronics and picked up where he left off at Circuit of the Americas. He took the win in both Road Atlanta rounds, one of them from the pole. The only spoiler preventing a perfect weekend for Loshak was JR Osborne, who took the pole for Saturday’s race with a qualifying lap of 1:21.474. Osborne led in the early laps but dropped out on lap 7 with an engine misfire, leaving Loshak and Glenn Cooper to duke it out for the top step of the podium. Loshak prevailed but Cooper wasn't far behind at the stripe. Alex Mayer was able to move up from his 5th grid spot to take the final step on the podium.

After strong storms passed through the area early Sunday morning, there were dark skies and a steady rain at race time. In addition to Osborne, who was unable to repair his electrical problem in time for round 6, McEwan and Slahor elected to sit out the soaked race. This left Loshak, Glenn Cooper, and Alex Mayer to battle for the lead. On the opening lap, Mayer spun in turn 3, giving a position to Michael Crowe. Mayer recovered quickly and repassed Crowe, who pulled off later in the same lap with a fuel supply. problem. Before completing the opening lap, a crash in turn 1 brought out a full course caution, allowing the field to bunch up behind Loshak. After 3 laps behind the pace car, the green flag came out again and Mayer resumed his charge, getting past Cooper and setting his sights on Loshak. After only two more racing laps, another crash on the front straight prompted officials to checker the race early, preventing Mayer from running down Loshak, and putting an exclamation point on a near perfect weekend for Loshak.

Glad you had a decent weekend under the conditions - sounds like you and Alex had a great time.

I was not there, but I have VAST experience with MUCH faster cars that "drove" by me in turns. I suggest that 'DOVE' is the more operative term in most cases. According to the GCR the primary responsibility for a clean pass rests on the overtaking driver (YOU in this case). The FV in question is not able to teleport itself off the planet just because you are closing rapidly. "Driving a wide entry and COMING down to the apex" is the standard racing line for most turns on most tracks - you should EXPECT that .. unless you get a 'POINT'. Did you get a 'point' from the FV? If not, that is a CLUE to you that you should WAIT - I know it's tough - I've been the faster car many times and lost LOTS of laps... but I drove my car into the trailer unscratched. FWIW - the BLUE FLAG is a warning to cars being overtaken to "not do anything STUPID" .. like VARYING THEIR LINE AT THE LAST MOMENT and to be aware that there is a faster car .. SOMEWHERE - that 'somewhere' could be 2 turns behind or 3 feet behind. The flag doesn't say.

Go watch some of the videos posted by the faster cars .. the ones that CAN see the car ahead with several seconds to spare .. then try to find a video from a couple of the slower cars - the ones that check their mirror 6 times between T5 and T6 and don't see anyone there .. then get DIVE BOMBED by someone that "just can't wait". Was *THAT* lap,, THAT important to you?

If you are going to run with MUCH MUCH slower cars (you have little choice here .. as do we), you simply have to get used to losing a lap now and again. Us Vee types lose 3/4 of the laps we try to turn in EVERY session because of NO CONTROL over the car behind.

WATCH some video.. and also .. consider the fact that this was a "Rational".. That means that the car in front of you might have WAY WAY less experience than you. Might even be on a Novice Log Book - it COULD be their FIRST RACE .. EVER!

The overtaking car has the last decision to make - the overtaken car absolutely CANNOT control what the overtaking car does. You may have also noticed that the overtaking car absolutely CANNOT control what the overtaken car does.

There is a previous thread on ApexSpeed - "Running with faster cars" - maybe should be retitled "Running with SLOWER cars". You might want to go read through it if you haven't already seen it.

There are several Atlanta region officials that deserve a big thanks but I didn’t want it to get lost in the race recap. These guys were instrumental in making this past weekend a reality. They genuinely cared about us and the series and, in my opinion, made the weekend more enjoyable than most. These guys “get it”.

Competition Director and SOM Nick Voight was key in making this weekend happen and did everything in his power to shape the event to accommodate the wishes of the US Formula 1000 Championship, from including F1000 in the first place, to modifying the schedule as best as possible (thank him for getting home early on Sunday), to granting the grouped paddock area. The shoes he inherited from Butch Kummer are big ones to fill but he is obviously up to the task.

Chief Steward Bob Hudson granted the split start and helped things move smoothly. (Thanks to JR Osborne for making sure F1000 was the lead group of the split start!)

Race Chairman AJ Schramm helped facilitate the grouped paddock parking.

Fletcher Williams was the guy that actually managed the grouped paddock parking and made sure everyone was accommodated (I think). He’s also the guy that served the moonshine at the US Formula 1000 party so he deserves two thank-yous!

There are plenty of other unsung heroes that made rounds 5 and 6 a success but these guys stand out. If you see them around the track or have a free minute to drop them a line, please extend a personal thank-you on behalf of the US Formula 1000 Championship.

Let me get this straight. There is a waving passing flag and a V manages to drive right into the sidepod of the passing car, obviously not checking their mirrors. A FV! Really? Your defending this driver? If this driver hit his sidepod he was already clear ahead of the V, and this person still drives into him.

I could write pages on this one, but I'm too tired. Look what happened to JR2 at Sebring. He could have gotten seriously injured, or worse. Earlier this month, Tom Beatty lost a race spinning off in the kink at Daytona avoiding a V that didn't check his mirrors. He missed him by inches. At a closing speed of 50+mph, it's lucky someone didn't get seriously screwed up.

If I was driving a V, this is what I'd do. I would check my mirrors before I enter every turn like everyone else(it's not like you're going so fast you don't have the time), and drive a predictable line.

You've made this argument before. Everyone needs to be diligent out there especially with these kind of closing speeds before someone gets killed.

At your quoted closing rate (50mph), that is almost a football field every 4 seconds, or near 150 ft in 2 seconds. The Vee's are being driven just as hard at their speed as any other group and drive the same lines every other car takes. Your statement "it's not like you're going so fast..." defines the problem. You appear to think the faster car is better and entitled to the line. At that closing rate, one can look in their mirror and there is nothing, two seconds later there is a car. The mixed groups are always going to be a problem when you have such a large difference in speeds. The overtaking car has the responsibility to avoid a collision with a car that may not know they are there. The consequence of assuming the slower car knows you are there can lead to disaster. It's easy enough to make mistakes when racing against cars running the same speed. Mixing slower and faster cars together amplifies the problem 10x.

I don't know who was at fault in this incident. But there is a way to avoid it.

THIS. A 1000 times this. FVs should never be on track wth FB/FA/FC during a race weekend. The closing rate is too great. Heck, the closing rate with the top 500s is almost too much. This type of grouping has to stop, up to and including refusing to race when grouped this way. I don't care how many closed wheel groups you have to make room for, you can't combine FV with the faster classes.

And having been on track multiple times as a F500 with FAs, no matter HOW diligent you are at looking at your mirrors, sooner or later you miss the guy coming to pass you since the closing rate is so high. Hopefully you can react in time when it happens. I can't imagine what it is like to deal with it as a V.

I'm not going to speculate on this incident without seeing video, but FBs and FVs should never be racing together, and don't always assume it is the slower drivers fault.
