Unless you're running near the track record, a short box is fine.

No a long box is perfectly fine also, I ran one there last year. Point is, it doesn't matter which one you have unless you're near track record pace.

    Default LRP

Long boxes have been preferred for LRP. You can runs a short box but your rev's will max out on the long main straight while long boxed cars will keep pulling while \ you're maxed. One of the national drivers ran the NARRRC runoffs at LRP in a short box a few years back, won... but hurt the engine.

Most of the NER/NYR run the long box.

Did you decide to sell the F500 and come race in the largest open wheel class in this area?

If the long box/short box thing did not matter at LRP, I think we'd have a lot more guys from up north coming down to race here. I've always been told that the gear box swap is the big issue.

I have run my short box at LRP on test days, and you definitely max out on the RPMs on the front straight ... almost by the start/finish line. You'll end up backing off when everyone else is still pushing.

Ha! That's where my brain went, too. Apparently I have a little more self-control.

    Default short or long box

I use to change my gear box to the long box with a 1:22 3rd gear that is the box you really want the Prefered box for LRP but I run a lap time of 1.04 Not 1 min flat so I now just keep my short box in and with the short box I went 1.03 still not at the front but for an old guy like me it is fine.

A little late but thought I would offer my 2cents.
I don't think you run out revs at the end of the front straight....even with a good draft.
You can even do most of Big Bend in fourth and quick shift to third on the run to the left hander.

When I ran the shortbox I certainly didn't go any faster. It does make the uphill, west bend and the downhill, slightly different events because a lift in any of those turns may induce a little more oversteer than usual. Since those are pretty fast turns, they become more challenging. It may be a slight advantage in the lefthander though.
I think you just need to drive the track a little differently with the shortbox. Not having the longbox shouldn't stop you from going to LRP.
The entry fee is more of a problem though.
