    Default T&S live from CoTA

If you're not finding the info on SCCA's site, and you have a smartphone, get Race Monitor from your app store, and spend the $3-$4 for the upgrade, which will give results from prior sessions as well as enabling watching a current session. Find the CoTA US Majors event on the opening page.

Even though SCCA said they weren't timiing P1 yesterday, it was still on there, all groups. Everything from today and tomorrow should be on there as well.

Typing on the phone, so I'll be brief. The track is just epically good. It's like a mix of Miller, Road Atlanta, and Road America. Runoffs should be here.

    Good grip on Thurs practice.

Wide range of setups seem to be successful too. JDR and Citation fast looking more trimmed. Astra making what looks like tons of grip, but seems a bit slower on the straights. Most guys in the mid 140's.

Rain yesterday making things interesting, we'll see! FA and CSR slowed us up a lot in the wet.

    More later,

    J

The schedule is starting to fall apart. They keep having to shorten sessions and we are way behind. If they really have to close the track at 5 then they are not going to get the races done. Groups 5-7 are getting screwed.

The schedule is very ambitious with all these cars. Need to speed up the time between groups finishing & the next one starting but with the amount of cars there is lots of clean up.

Wren is just upset that he has to walk so far from his paddock

FA, FB, CSR, DSR Race Group #5 Highlights......

Lap 4 - Full course caution. Saftey car ready to deploy.

Lap 4 - Pace car is waiting to pick up Byers (FA) the overall group leader.

Lap 5 - Byers (FA) has been picked up by the pace car with about 17 minutes left.

Lap 5 - Working to sort out the field behind the pace car.

Lap 6 - Entire field has been bunched up behind the pace car. Chaos breaks out on the front straight. Cars a speeding up then braking.

Checkered flag flies - Byers (FA) takes overall victory

Osborne, Loshak and Cooper take FB in that order. Alexander wins CSR followed by Fleck and Devenport

From the time stamps on the twitter feed it looks like group five got 10 minutes of green flag racing. 18 minutes from green to checker.

It was three laps of green flag racing. I'm still not sure of the results are official.

My understanding is that the incidents on track could not be cleaned up in time, so they checkered it. Unfortunate but reasonable. They ran us under double yellow to half distance/time.

Uploading the video as I type, will post a YouTube link when it is complete.

FB start was pretty darn orderly, actually. From what I could see, JRO might have gotten in a bit hot, and Steve Ott came out of T1 in the lead. JR and Coop on the outside grass/astroturf, and came together slightly.

Lawrence mentioned that he and Steve may have had some light contact, which may have resulted in what sidelined the Astra at the exit of Turn 11.

JRO and Lawrence pretty much checked out.

From my seat, got a good start, and picked up a few positions into T2. Found myself behind Alex Mayer down to 2, who got an, uh, "improbably good" start and passed several cars around the outside leading up to the hill. Managed to get by Alex, and we had a drag race down to T12.

Similar story the next lap, as I followed David Burkett, and managed to get by him as well. He was able to repass me on the straight down to T12, but I managed to get in front again under braking.

As aside, COTA races really well

Jose was very fast in his ex-JRO Stohr - not sure I'd have been able to catch him, as he was looking very quick. I could see Coop up ahead as well, but his laptimes show 2:10's, which neither Jose nor I could touch. I also saw Lucian lurking in my mirrors as he got up to speed.

The real mess was the response to the yellow flags. Several of the backmarkers that we'd already passed somehow didn't see the double yellows, and were continually passing cars under the double yellows. One Silver DSR passed at least 5 of us before noticing what was going on - very strange. I'll admit I had a slightly hard time seeing the double yellows behind the chain link fence, so I was slightly confused myself for a little bit.

Ultimately, all of us in FB seemed well-behaved though, so good for us.

Results as you saw, JRO, Lawrence, and Coop, with a Stohr 4-5-6 somewhat behind.

As folks have mentioned, we grid by fast laps from today, which will be JRO, Lawrence, Coop, Jake, Jose, and I think Lucian after that.

Going to have my hands very full no question trying to deal with Jose, he's gotten up to speed in JRO's car very quickly! Good addition to the class.

Enjoying putting faces to names as well - David Burkett, Richard Franklin, and no doubt some others I'm forgetting at the moment.

Bedtime! Will post the video link shortly.

    -Jake

its a shame that lack of efficiency , for whatever reason, has caused sunday schedule to go pear shaped and thus no one knew they were also qualifying when they were racing.

There isnt anything wrong using fastlaps as Q times when you know in advance, pro series do it all the time, but to spring it after the fact is wrong but in this case I know there isnt anything else that could be done. I do feel nad for the guys who in various races who had a lead and were saving equipment and will now pay the price though. I always drove flat out green to checker just because I loved to drive the car that way but most people dont push it hard if they dont have to.

On a different note big congrats to Lee alexander for winning in CSR with his Dauntless Stohr.

    Default RACE Report -COTA

JR OSBORNE WINS FAST AND FURIOUS SEASON OPENER AT COTA

Fremont Ca/Green Bay, WI (March 9, 2013) - JR Osborne took a race shorten victory in the season opening East vs. West shootout event at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

With the weather heavily overcast, dark skies, and the possiblilty of rain imminent the field of 19 Formula 1000 cars took the green flag some 30 seconds after the main field of national runners.

With pole sitter Lawrence Loshak leading in the run up the hill into turn one things turned fast and furious quickly. JR Osborne made a move for the inside line, running wide in the process, forcing Loshak to do the same. This left the door open for Steve Ott to make a run on both of them even further inside with Ott and Loshak making contact. Somewhere in the middle of all this Glenn Cooper and Osborne also managed to touch wheels before the foursome continued on.

After the all the wheel banging was over and with group headed back down the hill from turn one it was Ott in the Astra leading, with Loshak in the JDR a few car lengths behind, Osborne in the Citation, Cooper in the Firman, with the rest of the field following close behind.

Ott's moment at the front would be short-lived however, as he approached turn 11 the right rear rod end on the Astra broke ending his race. As Ott parked it, Loshak and Osborne continued to battle on, swapping the lead three times on lap two alone, with Osborne finally making a pass that stuck going through turn 20. Further back there were other drivers moving up and scraps developing as the pace quicked throughout the field.

It all came to end rather abruptly on lap 4 after a car from the CSR group crashed heavily into the wall at turn 11. After a couple of laps with the entire field of cars circulating behind the pace car the cars were bought into impound and race was called.

Jose Gerardo (#14 Stohr) is a very aggressive driver, and doing well in his first race events in F1000.

Accident Friday in practice at turn 11. Was in surgery yesterday for his back. LC3 did not make the race today, hope all is well with his Dad. I haven't heard how surgery went.

    UPDATE-

JR Osborne has been protested for passing under the yellow flag. Even though no advantage was gained it appears he will be penalized and dropped back to fourth place.

    Official results pending.
