    Default Oldest Champ at Nationals

Anybody happen to know who was the oldest person to win at Nationals(in any class)? I admit, I am looking for validation that autocross is not just a young persons game(and I will continue to keep my age a secret)

You can try to make a street car into an autocrosser or you can do a lot less work and make a race car into a great autocrosser

    Default Geezers...

Chuck Sample AM / 2004 at age 67...
Steve Tamandli EM / 1998 at age 60+

Just the two off the top of my head. Both in (high power to weight) Mod cars!

    Pru,

    He said "old" . . .

    Mark,

Bill Fleig BP in 1998 MAY have been in his late 60's. The Kelly's would probably know since he was from Carmichael, CA and I read about it in North American Pylon.

My attitude is that I'm nowhere near as fast as I was when I won a couple of Nationals in slower classes but autocrossing in general and a formula car in particular are good for my continued health. Lot of walking, thinking, and flexibility (to get in/out of the car, load the trailer, change tires, car maintenance, etc.), and driver weight control all required. Plus the data acquisition stuff helps keep the "mind" exercised. AND I'm a morning person (typing at 6:30 AM )

    Default Dan Carmichael 76

Dan Carmichael, father of Mike Rand's better half, Tracy, won his 3rd National Championship in 1995 when he was 76 years old. [I think the class was FA.]

You guys are talking Runoffs, Mark was talking about Solo Nationals, I believe.

I'm not sure who has been the oldest autocross champ...but, Mark, you're nowhere close, even if you wait a couple of years to get your jacket!

I thought Chuck was 70+ when George let him co-drive in AM and won? I spent hours watching Chuck drive X1/9's in street prepared then prepared over the years. Very talented. He said his driving went off for several years then had cataract surgery and was shocked at how much better he could see again.

Thirteen times Dan Carmichael launched an F6 Hellcat off an aircraft carrier in the middle of the Pacfic Ocean and flew to meet the enemy in mortal combat and won. We should all get down and thank this man for what he did for us. I'm proud to say I raced with him.
