Peter Egan said it best. Making a Lotus reliable follows the same reasoning that causes a young divinity student to marry an exotic dancer on the belief that she can be reformed and will eventually enjoy sitting by the fireplace on quiet evenings, reading a a good book.

Have fun with the Europa. From a 67 S3 Elan owner.

I agree! Perfect quote. I emailed a link to the videos to Road and track to pass onto Egan, but I don't really think it'll ever get to him.

    Default Slight thread hijack

Why do so many Formula Ford drivers also have Lotus Europas? At a race meeting here in Sydney yesterday, at least three of us admitted to that affliction.

If you are a fellow Europa owner, get the lastest 2013 calender - http://www.lulu.com/shop/bryan-boyle...-20494083.html I'm featured in November.

Back on topic, the three videos were great. My wife could only agree on the reliabilty angle.

Reliable depends on how you define it . . .

Mine did rather well but I certainly needed to learn a lot to make sure I got to/from autocrosses without incident or to make minor in route repairs even when they were over 1000 miles away.

FYI my wife's was her daily driver for years . . . due to "tree damage" to hers she probably will not be able to watch these videos.

Probably 'cause they are one of the few street cars that actually feels a bit like an FF - even if just a poor cousin!

Was at a test day out at Bridgehampton many moons ago (FFs), and a fellow driver had his Europa there. Tricked out almost to the max (barely streetable), it was definitely a screamer.

Got done morning lapping, and hopped into the Lotus to go grab some lunch. About 3 miles down the road, he suddenly looked over at me and said "Never ever thought I'd say this, but the car really is a piece of sh^t!"

Sold it a month later and bought a new FF instead!

I sense a trend, old lotus AND a F500.... who is the saint for lost causes? from a guy who owned a '73 Elan +2 S130, and owns and races a KBS F500... at least not both at the same time.

Clearly race car buying is a disease I caught or a drug I'm using. I originally had been shopping for a formula ford but wasn't quite going to be able to come up with enough money for anything near a running car and then I found that KBS. It had been in a wreck and wasn't running, but compared to the lotus it was soooo easy to work on, I dove in. I still haven't gotten to race it much. I don't have an scca license and probably won't be able to afford the training to get it any time soon, but I hope to run it at the Autocrosses next year unless public demand to bring out the Europa gets to high. They are lotus club events that I run at.

Ben, I would love to know some things about your Lotus. I see your running a 4age, but the trans your using? The trans in the video that was on the ground didn't look like the lotus unit. Was that a boxter trans?

I'm using a 914 box behind my 4agte and I'm not to sure how well it will hold up yet ( I have yet to fire up the new motor and run this new set up).

The gearbox in the car is the original Renault 336. The transmission on the ground was a Renault NG1 5 speed which has the same bolt pattern but needs different mounts in the rear. I intended to swap it in as the ratios in the 336 aren't great for the new engine, but then realized I got the wrong variety NG1 and even with 5 gears the ratios are just barely higher so I figured swapping it in wasn't worth the trouble.

Sometimes I wish I had the Porsche box. It's heavier but is such a better box. And has more places supporting bolting it up to other engines.

My gearbox bolts up to the 4AGE with an aluminum adapter plate made by John Pels in Texas. It made the engine swap fairly painless.

    Ben
