    Default Nelson Ledges shout-out

I had a great time last weekend at Nelson Ledges and should publicly say thanks to the drivers who helped me begin to figure-out what I want/need with my rear suspension, how to get through particular corners better, and just generally for the encouragement and camaraderie. Big thanks to everyone:

I'm hoping to be there, Mark. I still think visually that I have some toe-out in the rear that I'd like to check in the garage and if it is excessive, bring it in a bit.

It sounds like drivers have very little if any toe-out at the rear....0-1/8". I'm all for anything that helps the car turn-in but not if the cost is scrubbing speed and having the rear dart around on every bump when I'm heading down the straights.

I was using the higher tire temps that you suggested and I liked that in combination with the softer rear suspension.

One thing I would like to throw out there for your comment or others. I began to notice Sunday that when I go over the two distinct bumps heading into turn 12 where cars cross-over the track, that on one of them (the second, I think), the back of the car wants to hop out to the left. Do you get that same feeling in the car? Is there something I can do to help the car be a bit more stable there? I was thinking that maybe if I try to get over to the right sooner I might hit them more perpendicular but was looking for some input.

    Thanks!

That's the trick with that second hump. You have to resist the urge to start turning for 12 while the car is still light. Of course you also have to make sure you don't have the car rotating to the left trying to get over to the right side of the track to set up for 12 as well. You have to find the line where you get where you want to be for 12 turn in while making sure you are going straight when the rear gets light.

Spun our golf in spectacular fashion because I didn't have it straight when the rear went of the hump.

You might want to check rebound if your car gets loose on bumps. Since we experience immediate camber change with any travel, the tire patch is always changing. Try a bit more rebound.

I'm going to have to buy a rebound adjustable shock for that.....I'm a newbie low-buck run-what-you-got guy until I'm no longer the biggest variable in the car!

I'm going to check rear toe tomorrow and how much camber I have at full-droop. Maybe that will add some information.

Two other questions if I may:

-Just out of curiosity, what rear shocks are available for FV aside from $1000 Penskes? We think I have a Carrera shock in the rear and I'm guessing they're more affordable. Who sells them and what do they generally cost?

-I am also thinking of running a slightly softer spring. Where can I get springs?

    Thanks in advance,
    Matt

If you have a Carrera on your car it is adjustable. There should be 3 clicks that give you 60/40, 50/50/ and 40/60 bias on compression vs rebound. You will have to take the spring off and collapse the shaft into the body to engage the adjuster. Look for a dot or line on the shaft eye and line it up with numbers on the body. ALways turn the shaft clockwise and if you want to go from 3 to 1, go all the way around.

I have no recommendations for shocks but there are alternatives. Watch the classifieds for other classes, sometimes you can find takeoffs at reasonable prices. Make sure the shaft and travel will apply to your setup. You can buy another shaft but they're not cheap. Once you 've got a shock it will have to be valved for a vee and there are several sources for that.

The only one that will tell you a cheap shock is remotely close to a Penske on a FV rear is someone trying to sell you a cheap shock. Miss a few races if you have to and find a Penske or Fox for it and make sure it is valved by someone who knows what they are doing. Especially if Nelson is a place you will race. Also, for Nelson, and other bumpy tracks, soft is better than stiff for rear spring.

Cheap aftermarket VW replacement shocks are the 2nd-best front shock alternative to Penskes or Foxes. They are quite adequate, but will tend to fade on very tight or bumpy tracks, Nelson being one of them.

Online registration closes next week, everyone better hurry and sign up. We need more cars so we don't run the risk of getting stuffed in with the sports racers again.

    Default Nelson Fun Day?

Are there any open wheel cars doing the test day on Friday.

I was told 20 mins/hr for open wheel. Have others done the Fun Days that can confirm the track time allocation, regardless of numbers.

I plan on going. The last two times there were three groups and sessions were 20 minutes each. For most of the day I was the only formula car.....they've also thrown me in with a couple of SRF cars which was no problem.

How many OW cars are planning on the test day on Friday?
Kerrie won't commit to keeping the full open wheel session schedule until they see how many cars are there. I'd really like to know before making commitments to travel, etc. Sorry to hi-jack but this is most logical place to ask. Thanks!

Anyone who is available to go on Friday, but undecided, please contact me at greg13rice-at-hotmail.com. Thanks!
