I had only owned my 1980 VanDieman for a short time last year when I read on the UFF about a novice FF owner who had some difficulty draining the oil.Well,as a licenced mechanic of more years than I'm prepared to admit to here,I found this quite amusing. As an apology to him (I'm sorry I don't recall his name) and for the amusement of all I tell the following tale.
Placing a drain pan on the floor,I removed the return line from the oil reservoir, removed the spark plugs and pressed the start button. I watched the oil pressure gauge, which was reading
40 PSI. As the reservoir emptied I released the starter while there was still pressure and added oil. I figured I would 'flush' a clean litre through the system before changing the filter. Pressing the starter once again,I had zero oil pressure!! Assuming the scavenge style pump needed priming I 'sealed' the top of the reservoir with a piece of rag and applied the air line! I pressed the starter and once again,
bingo, oil pressure; also a litre of fresh sythetic all over my foot!! The reservoir split open!!!!!!!!!
