    Default Vollum in Comeback Drive

Vollum in Comback Drive to Win

Seattle, Wa - (May 28, 2012) Larry Vollum erased a 12 second deficit in the closing laps to win in Race 6 of the 2012 F1000 Pro Series presented by Hoosier Racing Tires, Hyperco, Jongbloed Racing Wheels, Geartronics North America and Elizabeth Jackson Artwork.

The race started under overcast and threatening skies and cold temperatures with pole sitter Vollum leading the field down to the split start. As the group made their way on their second lap second fastest qualifer Lucian Pancea took the lead entering into turn two. A few seconds further back John LaBrie and Denis Cosin were having their own wheel-to-wheel duel for position.

Some say things happen in threes and as the field began lap three while running third and for the third time during the weekend John Labrie found himself the victim of a broken turnbuckle as a result of the bumpy Pacific Raceways track. The resulting off road excursion at turn two would end his day and bring out a full course caution.

After the restart Pancea quickly drew out to a 12 second lead. But in the closing stages Vollum began to pull closer to Pancea as Pancea rear uprights began to over flex probably as a result of vibration from the rough road surface.

With one lap remaining Vollum finally caught and overtook Pancea as the two entered turn two in the exact place Pancea had passed Vollum earlier. The two would continue to battle through the final lap as Vollum crossed the line less than a second ahead of Pancea for a close 1-2 finish.

    Top 4 finishers, Race 6:

    1. Larry Vollum
    2. Lucian Pancea
    3. Denis Cosin
    4. John LaBrie

Some clarity: Lucian had wire holding his rear wing end plates together and that is what broke late into the race. I wrote the race report on an iPhone in the 15 minutes the plane was sitting on the tarmac waiting for takeoff. Had to work quick as they were telling me to put it away so no time to spell check. But the race finish was every bit as exciting as it sounds.
