    Default Data Acq: Looking for TPS sensor

    I could use that Data Acquisition section that's being discussed.

    Throwing this out to the masses: what's the thinnest TPS you have found/seen?

    The run of the mill ones, whether throughhole or tab actuated, are all about 0.75" thick, give or take.

    Gotchas:

    1. I'm looking for something about half that thickness.
    2. Even though it's a solid Plan B, right now I'm not looking for a string pot.
    3. I could go with a tiny generic Bourns pot, find some way to attach it, and solder on wires, but I would prefer something rugged and designed for something like TPS duty.

    What is the purpose of the sensor? Is it to measure TPS for the engine ECU? Or to measure throttle pedal position for driver evaluation?

    Driver eval.

    Yes, I can measure the pedal, but that just adds string pots or plunge sensors in the cockpit. Yes, I could have binary switch data but that's not as informative.

    So it doesn't have to have ECU accuracy but it would be nice if it had *some* nuance.

    Does the engine choice installation already have a ECU/PCM?

    If so, why not just log the signal at the appropriate pin?

    If not, how about a string pot on the linkage somewhere outside of the cockpit?

    I've used these behind the pedal to get the driver info. Yes, its a plunger in the cockpit, but its easy to mount, reliable, repeatable and cheap.

    They're actually made in the states, but online only seem to be available from RS Electronics in the UK for $30 or from Pi for $200 previously.

    Carbs, and no ECU. It's prehistoric (and now SCCA illegal, due to draconian Table E changes).

    Yes, a string pot is easy. See #2 on my list of wants.

    Well, if you can not log this information from an ECU channel, you will have to install a sensor somewhere in the car.....so why not at the throttle pedal? Installing an analog plunger-type displacement sensor at the throttle pedal is not too difficult, probably easier (and more reliable) than a string pot.

    Thanks Daryl, helpful survey.

    That's more or less the same sort of search I did some days ago. I bought a couple of the cheap ones, guesstimating their size based on connector or wire visual comparisons. That's how I discovered that they are most all quite thick.
