    Default Dan Wheldon

I know you guys are watching, and probably as miserable as I am following along on TV and Twitter. I'm afraid really terrible news is forthcoming. The looks on the faces of the drivers coming out of the meeting are not what I wanted to see.

Our thoughts are with Dan Wheldon and his family and the rest of the IndyCar family.

    Ditto.

I've said over and over, open wheel cars on ovals are stupid. Way to fast, with no runoff room.

    Prayers to Dan.

News. Am just watching the race, working in my shop. Had to shut it down for the day.
Very, very sad. Barnhard did the right thing, and the laps are an honor...and the pipers are very fitting.

Rest in peace, Dan. I thought Indycar and all involved handled this awful situation extremely appropriately. It was top class during an awful time.

My wife, a non-racer, was invited to a practice day at IMS in 03 or 04 as a guest of Andretti Green racing. (Chris had connections with the CPA firm that Kevin Savoree was from.) It rained that day so they spent all day hanging around the Andretti suite and garages. Chris got to meet all of the drivers, as well as Mario, and the only one who made a positive impression on her was Weldon. Chris is pretty deflated right now after hearing the news. I am as well.

We have no TV hook up and this is one instance where I am truly grateful to be a media Luddite. I hope to never see this.

In Wheldon's rookie year in IndyCar he did a video blog at various times during the season. I was very impressed by the wit and charm he conveyed. He was just himself and absolutely loving IndyCar. There were other drivers doing the same thing that season, but none were equal to his charming presence. Rest In Peace young man, my prayers and thoughts for your young family.

When I started to realize how serious this was, my thoughts went to Greg Moore. Same situation-last race of the season and in October.

The 5 lap tribute was a tear jerker.

    Great Racer,
    Great Loss
    God Bless His Soul
The real tribute to Dan would be a rational discussion why the top level of open wheel racing in the US is based on overpowered(detuned),over tired, so much downforce that the wings at Indy are negative for qualifying crappy spec cars. How about we go back to what it shoul'd be. Anytime you have to be flat out 100% on a lap you"re not a driver you're a passenger. Indy Car on ovals has become restrictor plate racing with dramatically worst results. Dan came from F2000 underpowered cars with great competition. Lower cost, safer racing, giving more drivers like Dan who came up through the ranks a chance. Slow them down, reduce cost, increase competition and add fans.

I have to agree with Reid. Concrete is no way to control a spin. What a loss. I barely follow pro racing, and still heard so much good about this guy. Prayers for the family.

The terrible loss of my favorite IndyCar driver. This really hurts.

Found this quote on Dave Moody's Sirius Speedway blog tonight:

CBS Racing Commentator Ken Squier to ESPN.com’s Ed Hinton: “I couldn't understand how anybody could get all wound up watching guys in a baseball park scratching themselves and spitting tobacco. When the guys I admired drove down into the corner, the issue was whether they would come out alive on the other side. This is the one sport where -- if you are committed to it and play it at the highest level -- you take the highest risk. If you're going 200 miles an hour… right on the edge of control, that's a risk."
