    Default CM "Lost Cars"

Over the past several seasons, CM competitors have been formulating ways to increase class participation. One idea centers on finding “Lost Cars”. That is, CM cars that are no longer being run, but could quickly be placed back into service. To that end, here is a listing (updates) of a few of these “Lost Cars” (Found / Club Racing):

If you know the whereabouts of any noted cars (or others to be added/removed), please reply with any details you can provide (location, last run, contact info). We will do our best track down these cars to see if they are available for sale.

    Thanks,

    Default Found One!

    Sirota, Mark : 88 Van Diemen RF-88

    FaceBook comment from Mark:

I still have mine, and would consider selling it. It has a 0-hour MWE motor, new floorpan, new paint. Needs a little final assembly. Definitely championship capable, IMHO. (I'd post this on sccaforums, but I can't seem to log in or retrieve my password.)
IM me if interested and I will follow up with Mark (Ben, I have already sent your contact info to Mark).

Good thinking Pru! I'll add my old car to the list :

    Thad Bolline '88 Reynard, bollini@tx.rr.com

I sent him an email before I bought my VD, but didn't get a reply. Last I heard, he doesn't come out often.....

I also heard that Gary Godula blew up the motor on his '88 Reynard, and then started doing even more running races (Marathon stuff).

    Default Thanks!

    Barry,

Thanks for the lead on your old Reynard. I will add it to the list as well following up directly with Thad (hey, another eMail might just prod him into action ).

As for Gary, yep we had heard the same; his Reynard suffered an engine failure Club Racing at Grattan and has been parked since. We'll follow up with him shortly to see if he intends on making a return someday...

Ben and I have made contact. Thanks for enabling that, Chris.

Anyone have good resources for pricing a Formula Ford? I haven't been advertising it (or even thinking about it), so I need to do some research to figure out what it's worth.

Mark sold his car to a very nice guy in my region (Mohawk Hudson). This person returned the bodywork to original and performed a complete frame up restoration for Club Racing. Shortly after doing all that work, he sold it because of family issues. Count this one as out of Solo circulation.

Have you tried performing a search here on Apexspeed? I recall seeing at least one car of your model for sale here a few years ago. Obviously, your car will be worth more to the Solo contingent than to a club racer.

If the search is unsuccessful or if you want more feedback, you could simply post the question to the Apexspeed community at large. But then you run the risk of showing your hand.

Or contact connected individuals personally for advice. There are plenty of them here.

Sound advice from Jim. In addition to Jim and myself, Peter Calhoun can likely give you a fair appraisal for the RF-88. That is, feel free to contact any of us for a price point recommendation. IM Jim or I for Pete's contact info.

    Pru,

Al Cram sold the Tiga to Bruce Parker in CNY. He completely restored it (including a new Prince tub) for road racing over the next several years but only ran it a few times. He sold it a few years back... not sure who purchased it.

    Default Carriere/Diemer Tiga SC-85

Craig Henry told you about Al Cram's SC87 he got from the Marinus'. But unless he sold it, he bought our Tiga SC85 that we bought from Jeff Glenn. We ran that car in 1995-6.

    Default Jeff is still racing

    "Gordon, Jeff : 82 Reynard 82F (ex-pru-,ex-Hale)"

I have heard Jeff is still racing, but I think he has switch to Chevy power. I seem to recall he now is running the #24 for Du Pont. Maybe just a different guy with the same name, Do ya think?

I admit it makes for a funny story when someone inquires about my 82 Reynard; "Oh, Jeff Gordon owns that car now."

    Default Tiga SC85 Status

    John,

I sold your old Tiga SC85 to a road racer in NC (unfinished restoration state) who owned and road raced a SC85 back in '08. He and a friend were going to finish the restoration so they could run the pair. The class tanked somewhat shortly after the anniversary gathering. I'm not sure if he has even run the original car.

I'm suprised that some of these cars are being converted back to road racing. They can't be competitive even on a regional level, can they? Or are they eligible for CF or Historic classes?

    Geoff,

Part of the appeal of CM is the fact that these cars still have value for Club Racing. That is, the cars can be sold/returned to the Club Racing. At a regional Club Racing level, there is no reason that any of these cars cannot be competitive.

Sports 2000's apparently have (or had fairly recently) substantial market value for road racing (club or vintage?).

My car wasn't on this list, but I'll jump in. 1977 Zink Z10C converted from road race to CM by Paul Schelling and Kate Hughes, raced for a while in Glen and Finger Lakes region events in NY until around 2000 or so, and then sat in their garage for about ten years. I brought it back to life for this season. Racing CM in the CNY region.

Haha, thanks. It's Lotus Krypton Green. The sun reflecting off it makes it look a little lighter than it is. When I register for events I use "Highlighter" as the color.

Here's a few other fast cars that I wonder about...
    - The Van Diemen RF88 of Tommy Saunders, then Gary Richardson. Sold to Ohio, maybe?
    - The Swift of Tommy Saunders.
    - The Reynard (?) of Bert Swift. Did he take it road racing, maybe?

    Mark,

I believe that Jim is correct with regards to the Tommy's Swift. I'm not sure about the Van Diemen.

I think Bert Swift's 88 Reynard was purchased Byan Cohn who took it Club Racing.

Peter Calhoun should be able to provide a bit on insight regarding these cars...

The Saunders/Richardson Van Diemen is living in Chicago owned by the Fortini's and has been in the process of a ground-up, which has been sidetracked by life and kids karting. Ross lurks on this site on occasion.

Tommy's Swift is also living in nothern Illinois being run in Midwest Council track events. Crashed once and last seen at Autobahn summer 2010 in a still near identical livery down to the same decals.

Bert Swift originally obtained the Reynard from Bryan Cohn and then I believe traded it back to him for a ex-Williams Citation 2 liter car to go road racing. They brought it to Solo Nats once running it in BM and ended up selling it to Greg Scharnberg who road races it in MidDiv. I was trading e-mails w/ Bryan earlier this week I will see if he knows where it ended up or maybe he will chime in here.

Then there are the Texas cars not owned by Saunders/Lumpkin or Dickey. What happened to Eric Jones- Van Dieman or Phil Waters?- Van Diemen and there might have been another one or two others in the late 90's.

Then there's the cars that went to Australia/New Zealand such as Jeff Slater- Reynard 84 (MKE) or Wayne's- Lola 440 (CHI). Washburn's- Swift did go back road racing.

According to a follow up post on the SCCAForms CM "Lost Cars" thread by Eric Jones, Ed Rushing now owns the ex-Jones RF-88. Not sure about Phil Waters car...

I wonder who among the CM autocrossers or former CM autocrossers has had the same CM car for the longest?

I suspect Stan Vann with his Caldwell since I'm pretty sure he had it when I got my 85 VD in 1991.

Forgive me if any of these cars are still racing, I have not been keeping track!

Also from Texas, Gregg Lee had an '83 Van Diemen. What about Stuart's old car before he started co-driving with Tommy?

Also missing is my old '82 Van Diemen. I sold it in '94 to Bill Lamkin, who then sold it to someone autocrossing in New Mexico (I think), no idea what happened to it after that.

Charlie Mathews' Lola? [ EDIT: whoops, I see that's already on the list. ]

Dave Johnson's purple Tiga S2000? I know he moved to Reno many years back but can't remember what happened to the car. [ EDIT: maybe that one went here to SFR to Kevin & Karena Christman. I should ask around. ]

Last report Stu's car was still sitting in Tommy's garage, but that was a couple years ago. I had added Gregg's car to my list too.

Folks should remember back in the late 90's we were consistently above 30 drivers at Nationals and we can get there again.

    Peter,

Are your 30 car numbers before or after the 440/500's and Solo Vees were moved to FM? My results are at home.

A mostly local NC but sometimes Pro Solo and National Tour/Nationals competitor was David Frye. David had a couple of 440/500's and then a Tiga Sports 2000. The 440/500's went to road racers I think. The last I heard the S2 went to a vintage racer. David "retired" from the sport completely afaik.

Dave Johnson's purple Tiga S2000? I know he moved to Reno many years back but can't remember what happened to the car. [ EDIT: maybe that one went here to SFR to Kevin & Karena Christman. I should ask around. ]

Yes, Kevin and Karena still have the Tiga S2000 and are planning to run again whenever their money tree grows some tires again. I visited them and talked about it last fall in San Jose. They would not let me have it.

    Default Inspiration

This thread sure brings back some old, but fond, memories. If we are going way back the Royale S200M S2 I trophied with back in '91 & '92 was converted to a CSR road race car by Randy Zimmer in WNY (rotary powered.) I think it eventually was crashed then parted out. Jim Gary was running the Gemini and Stuart Lumpkin and his brother were running the Lola 340 back then... close to 40 entries some years.

Like many individuals, my employment situation has been up and down the past five years forcing me to travel an average of 45 weeks/year to pay college tuition fees for my two daughters. I have an RF92 FF in the garage I have been slowly working on and buying parts for (story of my life) but it does look like I will have it done this spring. Hopefully I will not be DFL at every event. I've also thinned down enough to fit in it reasonably well and 25lbs more will help out even more (the reason I drove S2's in the past.)

Mark, I would prefer you not sell the RF88 but if I get the car out next year and there is an event close to your area, that I can make, you need to promise to co-drive with me.

Great thread. It has inspired me to get the car done and get back out. Hopefully Jim Gary stays in the class and has purchased one of the very cool newer cars I was tempted to purchase (Piper, Honda powered Swift, or ???.) As always, what make CM great are the people.

Yeah, I wish we'd had the opportunity to compete against each other more -- all those years I was competing actively while your car was sitting in your garage, and now you'll be out there and, perhaps, me without a car.

I won't promise not to sell the car, but I will promise to take you up on the co-drive!
