    Default I am continually amazed

at just how small and insignificant "our" numbers are.

It hit kinda hard today at one of my accounts, talking with one of the general service (apprentice type) mechanics. The guy is telling me how much he loves his fantasy football league. Tells me he basically won the FF Superbowl (I'm guessing of his league?) last year, and that his wife won't let him hang up the banner(!)

He actually told me that he "Lives for it". I kind of died a little bit inside as I heard this news...

We racers make jokes all the time about Secret Car Club of America, bitch about how to shift gears, engines straight outta wrecks and engines that have been rebuilt, etc...

At the end of the day I think you'd have to go out to the three hundreth and eleventy eigth decimal point to show just how small our numbers are:

Serioiusly small, like more folks have gone on a spacewalk than have driven a FB car small.
Do you realise that more people send pics of their junk via Twitter on an hourly basis, than have competed at the last 23 June Sprints combined?
How can it be that there are more people on death row then have ever taken apart a Hewland Mk9 and got it back together correctly on the first shot?
Speaking of shots, more folks have shot themselves "by accident" in the last 6 minutes than have competed at the R/O's last year.
Would you ever have thought there have been more folks who cashed in their chips attempting to climb (or descend) Mts. Everest, K2, and Hood than have, oh hell - you get the point!

We are a small, dedicated, damned near insane bunch of humans, and personally I would not have it anyother way. Fantasy Football - ugh!

Don't feel bad, Coop. I have a brother who throws sticks at the wall. The sticks have feathers at one end and a nail at the other, and the throwers try to hit a particular spot on the wall...and he calls it a "sport". He's some kind of "champion" at it, too.

Default Lack of big salaries? Sports vs. Games

I agree. What many consider as " Sports ", are simply GAMES to me.

I'm competely amazed at the time & effort people expend to fill their minds with useless stats ie" SportCenter " etc.

Basketball is bouncing a rubber ball for christ-sake.

I thought maybe it's the pure envy involved with following huge salaries?

At least we've got Shumacher making a million a race...NASCAR drivers and their endorsements & trinkets.

    Interesting choices for " Sports"

Apparently, Revs29k hasn't experienced the wonders of a cup stacking tournament first-hand.

I'd be careful about using "death row" and "shot" in the same sentence!

It's mainly a US thing. Go to Europe and F1 and MotoGP are about as big as it gets next to Soccer. On the other hand, I'll bet there are more Fantasy Hockey players in the US than hardcore soccer fans.

    Something like:

Auto racing, bull fighting, and mountain climbing are the only real sports ... all others are games.

Not that many racers compared to other sports, true.. But to make a fair comparison - what's the percentage of people who play, I dunno, soccer - compared to the percentage of people who can afford to race, that actually do?

We're all probably in the, what.. 1%? 0.5%? Of the population who can afford to do this. So it's no surprise other sports have at least 100 times the participation level..

That's only because there's no real hockey team to follow in your neck of the woods.

I've had several people want me to do fantasy football or NASCAR or whatever. Not interested in the least, but hey, knock yourself out.

Reality is much more to my liking. I don't even play video games except the Wii with my kids if they ask.

The Bruins can sit back & drink since they are not sweeping streets, replacing plate glass windows...

Coop, i reread your initial post on this thread.
You understand dude. When i attempted to find all the FC cars in North America, i beat the bushes for months... and came up with less than 250. And a lot of those cars are inactive. Those of us involved in this activity are just a spec of flea poop when compared with the total population.

Seriously, how many folks can blow $2K to $8K on a weekend that doesn't involve their spouses getting to dance on a cruise ship? We are rare and we are insane.
