Default Where to get lead plates or tirangles?

I'm not real happy with the weight tube I made with PVC and lead shot (mainly they are bulky) and think I'd be happier with some flat lead plates/triangles that I can mount in the space under the fuel cell (I think there's room there).

Do people have those poured custom for their application? is there a place you can just outright buy them?

    Thanks

How much do you need? I have a few spare ballast bars laying around, plus about 130 pounds of lead wheel weights in my garage I need to unload!

Karting stores or online should have what you want.

I probably need to have a total of about 30-50 pounds of extra weight in the car. The issue is going to be where to put it.

Did you get the e-mail I sent last week thursday on the other matter Matt?

    Default McMaster-Carr

I have bought it from McMaster-Carr:

Somehow, though, it seems wrong to ship weight...

    Bob,

I've made sheet metal forms for lead molds to fit specific areas on the Evolution, works great.

But where do you go to get the lead melted and poured? I don't think our stove goes to 650 degrees!

I only melt/pour lead outside and I stand upwind. Lead fumes are really bad news

Did you weigh the car at RA?

Didn't weight it at RA but did at home before I head out there - which was why I added the weight I did - jsut want to find a better way to do it than I did

    Default Lead flashing

You can get lead flashing at any Lowes/Home Depot.

You can cut it, roll it, fold it to any shape you'd like.

I believe you can melt it on a turkey fryer burner, maybe with a little air blown up the middle.

First, you can definitely melt lead readily with a turkey fryer burner. Second, look up the boiling point and vapor pressure of lead, and decide if you're still worried about melting it.

    Default 2 ways to go

I've used lead shot right in the bag - just covered the bag with two layers of racer's tape and secured it somewhere in the car where it won't get abraded. I have one of those that's been fine through 20 years of racing. Its pretty cheap per pound at a gun shop that has reloading supplies. The other way I've bought it is in 5 lb ingots from an industrial plumbers supply house in Rochester. Do a google search for "caulking lead" and you'll find some suppliers. Its a good shape to mount in the car. I drill a hole through the ingot for a 5/16" bolt and fasten it to the floor of the car somewhere. Another favorite hiding spot is under my 2 part foam seat. I cut out a spot where the ingot will fit.

    Bob,

Have you just considered more beer and pizza to meet min? it works but makes it very difficult to get out of the car.

$2/lb....don't know how that compares to your other options but seems reasonable enough to not spend too much time trying to find a cheaper solution.

    Bob...

Another thing you might try is a material like CerroBend. I think it's more pricey than lead, but certainly easier to work with.

A fisherman buddy of mine turned me onto it a little while ago. You can get it at different melting points - as low as 158deg. It's a combo of lead, tin, and bismuth. I think you can get it at McMasterCarr, but I'm not really sure.

    Anyway... just another thought.

If you hit the lottery between now and Mid-O, you could always buy some tungsten! hahaha!

    Cheers!

    Bob:
A few years back I raced at a local dirt track in a pro truck. When I bought the truck it had about 400lbs of lead in it. I just finished making a mold for 6" triangles I'll see how it goes in the molding process. Ill let you guys know.
