I just got word from the Sovren chair that a great one is no longer with us.. He will be missed.

    -------------------------------cut from email --------------------------

It is with great sadness that we pass on this news about one of SOVREN's most illustrious members, Pete Lovely.
We just received the following message from Butch Dennison:

This is very very sad news. Pete Lovely was one of the few remaining legends of early Amierican road racing. Did Formula 1 in the late 50's and again in the early 70's.

Last time I saw him was at a lapping day when he was 83 (a couple of years ago). Whipping a just finished restoration Ferrari around and showing the kids how it's done for sure.

    He will be missed.

tha shop my brother worked for at the time did some of the engine work on that Ferrari. The story of that car is just amazing (it was one of his 'works' cars back in the day and then lost and later found in a garage locally and then restored...)

During the Rolex Daytona Prototype race at Laguna today, they had a brief tribute to Pete Lovely on the air.... really nicely done guys.

I seem to remember a story of his F1 days. He bought a F2 car, added a larger gas tank (and engine??) and travelled the F1 events with the car on the back of a VW pickup/van with his wife as crew. Try to put that in perspective of the sport today.
