    Default 1988 red devil project

I have a 1988 Red devil that is mostly unassembled. Been in my shop for YEARS.. was going to convert it to a 600 but have decided to go back to what I know (formula vees). Photos to follow. Kawasaki 440 motor and a Kawasaki ZX6 motor go with it. Log books and all the parts to rebuild it are there. Needs a fire system and one fuel bladder and exhaust.
    $2000.00 O.B.O.

Fire system and fuel cell aren't necessary, as car is almost certainly going to be solo-only (unless you've replaced a large section of the frame/rollbar). It still will make a good solo car (I've got an '89 myself), but just isn't going to be a realistic start to a road racing project.

BTW, repost this over at Formula500.org, it'll get a lot more action.

    Default Why Not?

Why would this not be a realistic start to a road racing project?

90% of the frame, the engine, and the rear suspension would need to be replaced. They're all adequate for solo usage, but either uncompetitive or obsoleted due to changes in safety rules.

The frame doesn't meet the minimum thickness for road racing (the rules changed in 92(?)). The engine is no longer competitive in road racing (it's 440cc, everyone now runs 500cc motors with 30% more power). The rear suspension is an antiquated design and is no longer competitive in road racing (arguably not in solo either, but the difference is not as significant in solo).

All told by the time you got it to the track, you'd have so little of the original car left that you might as well have started from scratch.

And when the MC proposal is voted in then you can use a 600cc drivetrain for Solo which will still require a new engine bay for the different mounting points - good time to update the rear suspension (and make it a one piece chassis) to handle the 50+ additional pounds of the MC. Other items needed - small gas tank, paddle shifter, clutch pedal, oil cooler w/remote oil filter, electric fans for both oil and water coolers & custom header/muffler. One last item - shorter tires (stiffer sidewall) to handle the heavier weight without flopping over.

Hi. Is this car still for sale? I would only use it in autocross. Thanks, David
