Well, to answer your original question, I definitely would get a new spring retainer. I don't doubt that someone else will chime in and say it's perfectly fine, but hell, I'd do it just so I wouldn't have to think about it again. I have enough little problems and nags and doubts about things I've done to the car that when something is obviously cracked, it needs to go. I don't think the lack of a droop limiter would have caused that, though. Maybe the smaller adjuster let the spring ride at an angle and put too much pressure on one side of the retainer instead of spreading it around? Dunno..
