    Default F1 on FOX

So, besides having to sit through the nauseating dumbing down of the sport to appeal to "casual" viewers (read: NASCAR fans), this weekend's FOX broadcast was standard def, cropped 4:3 instead of the usual world F1 feed that is letterbox and pseudo HD.

Anyone know what that was all about?

I don't know about HD (not there yet, so can't comment on that), but I did sit through the first few minutes with no sound. That was pretty infuriating. I don't know if that was a local problem or not.

Might have been how your affiliate broadcast it. It was 16:9 down here.

The dumbing down was pretty painful, especially since it was one of the more interesting races with respect to tire strategy... they did a terrible job keeping track of who still needed to change compounds, and who didn't.

    Default Full HD

Full HD 16:9 here... looked real nice. Did get a bit of a chuckle when they had to explain the obvious for those more use to watching NASCAR . Barely made the start & didn't finish with the complete post race interviews, bit of a shame.

Ahhh yes, must have been the low-rent Chicago FOX affiliate. You know, 3rd largest market in the US and all...

I too was surprised it was not upscaled...but alas I was just happy I didn't have to go to a bar to watch it. But then again, upscaled video isn't exactly hi-def. Trying to get a soccer bar during the world cup to put one TV on F1 can be a daunting experience...even on a Sunday at 7a for continent races as they're at least 2 hours and 4 pints ahead of you...

No HDTV here. Geez my computers 10 years old you think I've got HD?? LOL.

Yes I was just GLAD to see any F1 on a network. That's the 1st F1 race I've seen since the last 11 laps or so when they ran Indy last.

AND they did say they are covering the next one on FOX!

A contrarian view: We should be happy that the Canadian GP was broadcast on Fox, even if the finer points needed explaining for non-fanatics. And that the race was not a snoozer.

If F1 is to prosper in North America, it will need to have many more than the 'usual suspects' watching it.

The HD was exellent, however, I did not apprciate our Fox affliate [LA] showiing 6 min of the race and then 3+ min of advertising. Great race though,

Russ, if no one else had missing audio at the start the problem must have been with our local ComCast.

I found it interesting that they did more dumbing down specifically for nascar viewers than they do when it's on the actual nascar channel!

I'm fine with the dumbing down....if it gets a few more NASCAR fans to watch then it's all good.

Just don't deliver all the reasons F1 is so much better too loud and proud or your gain is likely to be much smaller. Kind of like the "open wheel crowd" bragging about big budgets and real race cars without throwing any real numbers around. I think quite a few might give up their ITS BMW or SM if they knew they could race FC or FFit (same level of competitiveness) cheaper.

    Default Sound

We also had no sound at the start and it sounded like they tried for 5 mins or so before it came back consistently. North of atlanta.

I don't think F1 is produced in HD, I think it is up scaled at the broadcasting station. I read a thread about a survey FOTA just had done and the #1 item fans wanted was a HD broadcast.

I was simply tickled pink that I got to watch a F1 race.

Not having speed for the last 4 or 5 years and losing versus last year, I do not have much choice in the races I watch.

And I refuse to pay another $40 a month to Time Warner to get versus and speed.
