    Default Gearbox Oil Capacity

What is the proper oil capacity for a Mk8 gearbox used upright in an air cooled Super Vee?
    Thanks.

    Default Gearbox oil capacity

I would use the factory vehicle capacity, that is, just below the side fill hole.

Rusty, Be careful to using the factory spec for the oil level as when you race the car the temp of the gear oil gets hot enough to expand, quite a bit. The Banshee racecars also run the VW case in the upright position and they run the gear oil DOWN below the side oil hole about one knuckels worth. Also be sure the overflow tube goes into an overflow container & not onto the racing surface.

    Default Trans oil

Don't forget the VW casing is upside down, so it should be about 1/2" to 3/4" below the side plug....

    Rusty,

    Complete fill is 1.5 quarts
Gear change will be 1.0 quarts. .5 quarts will stay in the diff section.

If you plan on running any high bank tracks such as Daytona ,
    add .5 quarts. .

    Complete fill 2.0 quarts
    Gear change 1.5 quarts.

This will help keep oil on the pinion head .

Rusty; I think the answers are getting confused between uprite, like in your racecar and the F/F style which is upside-down and uses less gear oil. With too little oil the tranny will run HOT, lose HP and burn-up gears and bearings. Be clear, be careful.

    Clyde,
That is exactly why I asked the question. I have the proper info for the Mk8/9 when run upside down as usual, but I had no accurate info on running the box rightside up as originally used on a VW air cooled engine. Thanks for your comments.

It will be the same with either gearbox configuration.

I am not certain that I understand the question My car is a 1977 Lola T328. The engine is a VW Type 4 with 93MM cylinders ( 1800 cc's ). This was the last year of air cooled powered Super Vees. Beginning in 1978, 4 cyl. 1.6L inline water cooled VW engines were the engine of choice. The Lola does have a wing.

Any history on that Air cooled SV?

Probably having raced oine for longer than anyone in the world (1978 to 1994) I can tell you that about 1 knuckle below the side filler hole is the correcl gear oil level.

When filling after a gear change, give it a few minutes to settle before checking the level.

If it is a little overfilled, it will puke it out if the box is vented.

    Steve,
The car is HU89. Papers that I got with the car indicate that it was originally campaigned by Eddie Miller.

    Rusty,

I sold my T-328 about 12 years ago to a guy on the West Coast who was going to run vintage.

Heard once from him then he disappeared off the face of the earth.

All I remember is that he worked for Honda.

One of his coworkers was in charge of moving the Honda show cars around the country.

Took it trailer, spares and all to the Honda plant in Marysville Ohio and it went West in a Honda show car transport semi.

    I think mine was HU-92.

It was brought from Carl in 1978 and I acquired it in 1981.

Just trying to track it down.
