Catastrophic failure mode... While getting ready to pull the engine I found this in front of the headers...

Funny thing is that the engine was still running at idle...

Wow. Still idled?! Did it knock? :-).

I guess it's too soon to know the cause (or do you know?). The big end of the rod looks pretty discolored, so probably not a rod bolt. But, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Are you able to look at oil pressure from logged data? I forget, are you running a wet or dry sump?

That's true. Imagine the pain of this happening to an engine in another class. It's a bummer for Sean for sure, but much easier to recover than from other ventilated engines (FF, FC, FA!).

Ya, about 1/10th the cost of an Atlantic & you get a tranny with it.

Default No post mortim for now

I am sending it to George. I have my own theory as to what is wrong, but I await expert analysis...

Oil pressure was right as 40PSI at 8,000RPM just before the final upshift to 6th gear on the front straight... Then the death rattle oil temp 255 water temp 195...

    Default bummer...

Yes, but with a little help from my friends, I will be back - very shortly...

I am pulling the engine right now, and it is off to George tomorrow...

(For the record, George has been fantastic about helping me figure out my oiling and cooling problems - my failures are not at all related to his skills)

    Default Be careful...

I had a talk with my west coast contacts, and I hear "Provamo" will wake up next to a GXSR1000 head leaking oil into the sheets tomorrow morning...

What kind of oil are you running?

    Default oil

    Mike,

I was using 20W/60 Valvoline "Synthetic Racing" oil.

next time I will go to straight 50W synthetic. Not sure these multigrade oils are good in our application...

I don't know if there is a difference, but I am sticking with full synthetic motorcycle oil - trying Amsol (sp?)

Last year when I was worried about oil protection and hot oil temps I tried to research and find the best oil. I did not come up with a good independent study, but what I found made me believe that Amsoil was among the best. I have been using their 20w-50, with tentative plans to go thinner some day.

    Sean,

Ask George about the oil issue but I believe that he is recommending Red Line 40w racing oil. Per George he sees the the lowest bearing wear with Red Line.

I know from another source that the street rated multi-weights are not good for the temperatures that we run.
