    Default Good Racing Book Suggestions

I will soon be on a vacation that will required me to spend some time on a beach. Yeah, I know, not a bad thing. But I tend to get bored pretty easily on these beaches and I'm looking for some good reading materials.

Can anyone recommend some good racing reads? I just covered "The Art of Racing In the Rain" and I'm looking for a couple of other titles that might be interesting.

Perhaps something on the life of a famous driver or team. Can you recommend anything? It can be something old or something written more recently.

    Many thanks,

    Ralph

Default Fast Guys, Rich Guys, Idiots

    Hi Ralph,
This book by Sam Moses will leave you shaking your head. It was written in the '80's and recently released in paperback with a new forward. I have a copy I could lend you.

I'm back from Europe and living south of Akron. Getting my old Tiga ready for another season.

    Unfair Advantage by Mark Donahue.

I'd loan you my copy, but I sleep with it clutched closely to my chest, visions of a Porsche 917/30 dancing in my head.

I would highly recommend 'Sunday Driver', by Brock Yates, an account of his foray into Trans-Am and SCCA racing in 1971. A fun read, and a little time capsule from a simpler time.

I know one you don't want to read, and that's Against Death and Time by Brock Yates. He wrote it after he left the magazine and apparently forgot how to write. The book is dumb, poorly written, full of typos, and repeats itself. I was disappointed; normally he's an interesting writer.

    Default Thanks

Many thanks for the suggestions. I just ordered Flat Out, Flat Broke and Unfair Advantage. These two titles and a review of Going Faster should get me through the week and the plane ride.

    Thanks again,

All the books written by B. S. Levy are great reading. Start with The Last Open Road.

If you can find a copy of the mudge pond express by sam posey it is a great read, particularly for the beach.

I heartily second the unfair advantage.

"Crashed and Byrned : The Greatest Race Driver You never Saw" by Tommy Byrne

The man is an absolute lunatic.

Recommended to me by a fellow racer and I was waiting for the opportunity to pass along the recommendation. An easy and entertaining read.
