    Default SW Gauge problem

    Looking for advice from more experienced people.

    When working on my Zink, I found the temp sensor wire broken at the sensor in the water tank. Has anyone soldered these? Should I just replace it? Know any good sources?

    The face of the gauge says Stuart Warner 826409

    Garey,

    The old stewart warner electric gauges had a threaded stud with the wire connector held on with a nut.

    The mechanical gauges appeared to be a coated wire. Its not a wire, but a thin capillary tube. The bulb in the swirl tank is/was evacuated and filled with alcohol to drive a bourdon tube mechanism in the gauge. If the tube is broken, it can be repaired, but it costs more than a new gauge. They are not always accurate. The old style SW mechanical gauges are available from Summit or Jegs. They have electric ones too.

    As far as experience goes, I am very experienced with a gauge installed downstream of the water outlet. If you start losing water, the gauge sender may never see the temperature rise. It cost me a block.

    I specifically asked Jay Ivey where I should put the temp sender. He said "In the head at the water outlet, where it belongs." So I bought an electric AutoMeter "cobalt" series gauge with a 1/8"NPT sender in the head.

    Hey, anyone with SW experience -- I'm working with Garey on this issue, but the closest SW part number I can find in their online catalog is actually 82409. Could the missing "6" possibly refer to Bourdon tube length?

    Dan, you are truely wise! (Gee, I bet you've never heard that before....)

    One of the managers at work explained this to me on the plane this morning so I have now ordered an electric one from our Forum supporter Pegasus. John Haydon has been exceptionally helpful!!

    I have gotten in the habit of testing all new gauges before installing them. Electric not as easy to test as mechanical.

    An excellent reason to keep a $9 Walgreen's hot pot in the garage. Boil up some water and dunk the sensor bulb in it, or dump it in the header tank (if your sender is installed in the wrong spot, as mine apparently is... )

    Also good for assembling Socketless hose onto barbed hose ends! Coffee tastes a little funny, though.
