On the Atlantic version of that box, the vent is on the top of the rear cover. You should have one.

    Default Trans vent

Air inside heats up - expands, pressure needs somewhere to go (or it trys to push oil past some seal).

    Default Yes

Our T440 came with a rubber cap on the vent... this caused the bearing carrier to seep gear oil once it got warmed up.

We put a 6" line of tube in a pigs-tail setup (to prevent water from getting in there) to fix.

So yes - you need a vent.

On the Staffs, there is no seal on the selector finger shaft up top, just the DU bearings. Any pressure buildup will usually easily bleed out past the bearings. We never found it necessary to add an additional bleed port - the old Hewland HAS to have one since the finger shaft is sealed.
