Default Stohr F1000 Testing in Savannah

I just spoke to my dad, who along with Stohr Cars North America, is in Savannah Georgia at Roebling Road. There are testing the new Stohr F1000. On old tires and tempratures in the 30's, within 15 laps, he has already done a 1:07.3. That is equal to Dorian Foyil's existing track record set in the Monday race of the July Double National. He indicated that the car had a substantial amount of understeer that they were working out a little at a time.

    UPDATE
The first session after lunch yielded a 1:05.7........More to come.

The FA and overall SCCA Track Record is a 1:02.6 by Tom Nastasi in a Swift in March National in 2003.

Does Dorian hold the F-1000 record, or was that time in another car/class? Thx! Stan

    PS - Congrats, btw!

Stan, I think Steve is refering to Dorian's Stohr DSR track record.

For another reference point - I think Rob Poma set the FC lap record last year on the new pavement. IIRC, he went 1:07.0 in his RF-97.

Have your car ready for the ARRC at the freshly paved Road Atlanta...

Will the Shelton crew be running F1000? Will anyone have hurt feelings when our little homebuilt cars kick butt?
    We could see two 95VDs, a 96 and a 98, not to mention a F1K Tattus!

    Matt,

There were lots of new track records set at the last couple of regionals.
They just added some bumps at some less than ideal locations.

    Default First Stohr F1000 test

Stohr Cars North America will post test results later. Wayne and myself feel the day went very well for a first test. There are many more spring and wing changes to make next time out. I think tires used were from the Runoffs, as the recent Goodyear strike has limited tire supply.

    Default Arrc

We will likely be out there for the ARRC with two F1000s. i wont be offended if you beat me as long as you wont be offended by my excuses. I am already working on them.

    Too much to lose...
My excessive wisdom overpowers my willingness to apply more throttle and later braking...
Major elevations changes at RA are causing injection problems for my car since it is used to Texas...
    jet lag...
    My ankle hurts...
Too much barbeque gave me some stomach problems...
The college funds aren't fully funded yet...
    Old tires.....

I could go on, but those will do for now.

    Hey Matt,

We tried for Daytona, but they said that the track was busy with some event or something.

Moroso....Cavallino (Largest Ferrari Event in the country)
Sebring...wants too much dough and far away from Stohr Cars NA
Road Atlanta....too much red clay and too cold
    Brainard....under three feet of snow.
    Nurburgring....closed for a Gran Turismo 4 reunion
Laguna Seca....already rented for a NOPI convention
Imola....M. Schumacher is testing the new SmartCar Touring Car
Suzuka Short Course....under guardrail repair from my latest testing session of my Lotus F1 car on GT4.

So you see, there are a few more reasons than My Father and My Uncle have been driving Savannah since the mid 70's doing literally thousands of laps and know their way around it and, it is within 200 miles of the SCNA shop.

    Default Testing

    Steve,

You guys don't have any pull with Daytona?

Obviously having a former professional driver on a course he could drive in his sleep is going to produce good results. I'm sure they're very pleased with the results and we congratulate them for getting the car on the track. We'll be there soon.

I merely wanted to point out to the readers that may not have been aware....Roebling Road is VERY different (and MUCH faster) with the new pavement and several drivers have told me that comparing lap times on the new surface to old is like comparing apples and oranges.

I think we are all interested where these new cars, in an exciting new class, are going to fall as far as lap times and speeds....and my only point is that it would have been nice to have a more accurate comparison to previous times for all of us.

    Default Laurens proving ground

I mentioned this in another post but here goes. The Laurens proving ground a.k.a. michelin test track is available for rent. I met the reps for the track at PRI in december. Really nice guys trying to diversify their operation. They quoted $3600.00 per day for the facility. That includes safety personel and garage space with lifts, power, water, air and meeting room. We are all going when we get our cars going. If anyone needs contact info I will be happy to provide it. I think I will call the guys I met from there and tell them about this forum so they can advertise on it.

    Tell you what.
Take a brand new car, out of the box, and turn 5s at Savannah in the first day... that's impressive.
Forget all the trash talk about the surface, and thousands of previous laps... this car was brand new. Not only a new car, but a new design. Wow.
Insert Mark in it and it might go under a minute.

Especially ballsy, knowing that all of us would be watching. They had a lot at risk if that little white lightning would have hiccuped.

Way to go Lee, Bill, Craig, and all the appropriate Sheltons!

    Frog,

You had me at "Tell you what."

Until you said "Insert Mark in it and it might go under a minute."

    I KNOW you were kidding.

And don't forget Wayne on the congrats list.

    Steve

    BTW,

Matt what I meant to say was..........

"One small step for F1000, One giant leap for SCCA"

This wasn't an attempt to promote the Stohr cars, more a chance to give you results from the first test (that I know of) from a design built F1000 car. Special props to Sean for running the first F1000 in an actual race event.

We are all excited about the future of formula racing in the SCCA now.

Too bad I ran my sponsorship money out last season, I'd love a "go" in one of these cars.

    Default F1000 as a whole

THIS IS NOT ABOUT LEE, OR ME, OR ANY OTHER CAR.....IT IS ABOUT A CLASS OF CARS......AND POSSIBLY THE FUTURE OF FORMULA CAR RACING IN THE SCCA!

I will (and have not) disparaged anyone on this forum...even though they have disparaged me. My comments and research into laptimes were only meant to try and help frame the times of A PURPOSE-BUILT F1000 CAR into a relevant perspective....for everyone involved...because I knew the other camp would not.

Honestly guys.....my first thought when it was reported that a brand new F1000 car (on a cold day, with "old" tires, and within 15 laps) was under the DSR track record was....

    RESTRICTOR

....because you know the SCCA itself has just as much interest in how fast these cars are going to go....and we all know they are paying attention.

So....A 1:05.7 is definitely fast....especially compared to old records (like DSR at 1:07.3) but the new FC track record is a 1:07.0. So....a 1:05.7 seems to be in the F1000 range of what would be expected on the new surface.....somewhere between an FA and FC.

FYI...I recieved a PM last night from someone that works with an FA competitor that estimates times in the 59's....or possibly 58's when they run the Nat in March (conditions permitting). The old record (on the old surface...I know dead horse) was a 1:02....something.

    A little math....

    If FA = 59.0 and FC = 1:07.0 then FB = ?

....carry the 1.....I'd say between a 1:02 and 1:05. So....it appears that the new car is about where we would expect and our calculations on our car still appear to be valid. We don't have to bring out the restrictor data file yet....On with the build.

I know this kid from South Florida, but I think these days he is in a swamp somwhere in North Central Florida, not too far from S.C.N.A. I'm sure he would be happy to drive if his name was called upon. I'm trying to think of his name, maybe it will come to me later...

Yea,..I know a kid like that! He's from the boondocks of up state New York. He raced one of those Phoenix cars with a full body on it at the Runoffs way back when. Even lead the first half of the race till the electronics took a "dump". I bet he would drive one of them Phoenix cars again if asked! I also think the name would come to Matt pretty quickly!

    Default Name?

    Mike,

As I get older....my memory fades....2005 seems like a decade ago....does it start with Jeremy and end with Treadway?

He and I spoke on the phone not too long ago....tell him to keep the drivers suit handy. Also...see if you can line up a track with some fresh pavement up in the NE and I think we can put something together. Just make sure it's warm though....us Phoenicians have really thin blood.......

    Matt,

We don't need no stinkin fresh pavement! We're Northeasterners! We're used to pot holes and frost heaves! How the hell can you tune a chassis without em? Listen,...You send out a Phoenix F1k-07 and I'll bet Treadway beats ALL the Atlantics at this years LimeRock national and that place hasn't been paved in 14 years!

Thats a nice time at RRR, a track that is temp. and tire sensitive. For the first time out too.
I'm sure that this car will go in the 2's by the time the first Nat. race is over, especially if 10/tenths is setting it up!
Sure the FA's might go under a min. but their suppose to.

I thought that the FB was designed to time in between the FA and the FC?

The new surface is worth 2 sec. across the board, fast times are set at this track when the temp is between 50-70 deg. Very cold or hot temps seem to slow EVERYONE down about 2 sec. not to mention that this is a brand new car.

I also think that a VD FB could set times in that range too? It will be fun to watch the 2 types develop alongside each other this season.

Once everyone maxs out the FB development and my Pinto is wore out I may have to break out the saws-all?

    Default That Sound....

When I first got into the bike-engined cars it was because I'd suffered through dealing with the FC pinto engines......but the thing that put the hook in was that sound!

Now that we've got a Formula car with the bike engine....this is truly exciting for open-wheeled racing.

Can't wait to get our car out with ya.....

    Default Rear Engine Cover

I was curious if the Engine Cover has to be so massive. Is it possible to put the air scoop on the side of the car kinda like the Zetec.

Jay, those video's were only a few seconds long, so that is right in your time range.

The scary thing is the videos really don't give the car, or the sound it makes justice. I was at the test and I didn't know what the car was going to sound like. the first time it came by at full song, I just looked at the guys on pit wall and smiled, This really is an amazing car, in every way. And I am sure Cole will beat you all in this class too......
