    Default COuple New Pics

Gorgeous new gundrilled axles courtesy Doug Learned at Fast Forward Components and new aeroboots from Porter racing. I had broken one of the old axles at the machined circlip groove so I replaced them both.

Lastly a pic of the next project when I get some more time.

    Default Very nice

What a very nice installation Neil. I wish that they allowed twins to be bigger as they make a very nice engine.

    Thanks ... Jay

    Default Bigger Twins

I suppose I could sumbit a request for a rule change to allow for twins to be bigger displacement to be competitive with current I4's but I don't even know how uncompetitive my 1.0l twin is anyway.
The new Ducatti 1098 makes about 160HP and 95 Lb/ft torque. I'd love to do another conversion with that motor.

I sent a letter to the CRB about a displacement increase to 1200cc for twins. They rejected it but did say it could be considered in the future. See the Dec. 06 Fastrack, p.11.

    BTW, nice looking conversion Neil.

    Default RC51 Engine Weight

    Hi Doug,
Thank you. I don't know specific weight but it doesn't feel any lighter than a late model R1 for example.

    Default More pics and testing

    Here's a few more pics.

I'm also planning on being at the open test day at Buttonwillow on Friday May 18.
If you're there, stop on by and say hello.

I bought a cheap camera so if it doesn't fall off, there's a possibility of some video clips soon.

Well done Neil. Looks like it has the frontal area of a DB-6. If the engine is worth a damn, it should go.

That looks really good (aside from the engine choice... ). I like the sidepod treatment, too.
Oh yeah, nice F1000 decal, too!

By the way, is this the car that you put the R1 in or a new one?

    Hi Mike,

This is a different car. The first one was the RF89.
Am I the only one sporting the F1000 decal?
I think www.formula1000.com is still out there.

It sure is. Admittedly, it's in dire need of updating.
In fact, there is still a video of your first F1000:

    Default The first car

    Mike,
The first F1000, the RF89 R1 went to a gentleman up in Canada. I think it's racing in F Libre in western Canada.
Here's what it looks like now.

Default Another pic of the old car

The owner who bought the RF89 from me did a bunch of bodywork and put some bitchin' atlantic sized dubs on it.

If you have any hi-res shots of the car, posed nicely, please send them to me for possible inclusion in a future issue of FormulaCar Magazine. The car looks awesome!

    Default Pics

    Hi Rob,

I'll see what I can round up for pics once the car is back together. I had a bit of a digger during testing at Buttonwillow that took a corner off the car.

Testing otherwise went great. I need a bit lighter rear springs/damping and to move the shifter location slightly but I'm very happy with the way it is running.

Rob Fletcher now owns the RF89 r1 car, it competes here in Calgary, I will get a hold of him and make sure he is signed up here to feed us some more info.

A lot of development work on the car was done by Gord Leach, who is always lurking around here too.

Neil, this is one very nice looking conversion. Here's a stupid question that I thought of seeing the pic from the rear. Where do you put the rain light?

I live in Southern California now and I've been told it doesn't rain here.

Been thinking the same thing lately. Any suggestions?

For formula cars the book says it "shall be mounted as high as possible on the centerline of the car and be clearly visible from the rear". That being said mine is located on the rear cross member below the wing about 1 foot to the left of center & has allways passed Tech inspection. Just remember it's there for your's & the other driver's safety & in a good rain storm it is usually the only thing you can see when following another car. I have the LED bulb which looks clear & shines bright red when power is applied. They sell for about $6 for two on Ebay & claim to be vibration resistant, are brighter than standard bulbs & last longer.

    Niel,

Rotax has a new 995cc twin that Beull is using in his latest road bike. Torque82 ft. lbs. @ 8000 RPMHorsepower 146 HP @ 9800 RPM

Advantages: 35lbs lighter and runs cooler than a Honda RC-1 motor.

Another powerplant to consider for your next V-twin project, and the one I prefer above all, is the new KTM 995 V-Twin. Tune-able to 180hp and 100ft. lbs torque, running in super bike class, and even lighter than the Rotax/Aprilla, more reliable and longer life.

    Default V-twin/FR layout

Ah, this is the thread where the V-twin lurks...I think someone mentioned this.

Neil, this is inspiring. I have a much wackier plan, also using a V-twin (or maybe a V4: I've been smitten by the Interceptor since '85); take a look at the thread "Roads Less Taken"

    Default Twins, Tripples and V-4's

Hopefully the FB rules in the future will ensure that engines used are true production engines. I'd suggest something like 2 years on domestic market before being acceptable for competition.
Some of the new motors coming out are wild....for example:
    http://jalopnik.com/cars/motorcycles...wer-308089.php

I still think there should be a lighter weight limit for twins and tripples to encourage some diversity in engine choices. Everyone loves the look and sound of my twin at the track but it is down on power to I-4's

    Default KTM V Twin

    Neil,

KTM's latest V Twin used in their RC8 1190 is amazing, even stronger than the Rotax. The KTM RC8 1190 motor produces 180 HP STOCK! This is a fuel injected racing motor, built for racing. Factory engineers were able to pull 200 HP out of this motor, and backed it down for production. This motor is lighter thant the Rotax, and is the one I would consider for DSports racer.

The 1190 refers to 1190cc, DSR is limited to 1000cc, and the new Suzuki GSXR1000 make 200hp from 1000cc.

    Default V2, V4, L3

Thanks for the info Neil. That Aprilia mill sure looks the business. Not that I could afford one, but woweezowie! I'll stick with the 883 Harley, suitably upgraded on carb/intake and exhaust, or maybe a Buell. Less power (as you point out) but great torque and that wonderful V-twin sound.

I have to agree on variety. I know most problems tend toward converging solutions, but, to me, variety is what made me a race fan and car geek when I was a kid. Something went out of F1 when everyone was forced to use the same kind of engine, and that only over the last few years. Even during the Cosworth kit car era, you had more variety than now. Heck BRM and Ferrari kept on w/V12s.

No doubt the 1000cc fours are what everybody had in mind here, but making something else work is a wonderful challenge. Heck, when I think about it, FB/F1000 is the natural evolution of the 1.0 litre "screamer" F2 era, and not too far off the 1.5 litre F1, so the <200bhp forecasts are on schedule given how that class progressed. As then -- and we have the benefit of hindsight, experience and better equipment, safety issues will have to be addressed as power and speed go up, but variety will help make it a fun ride along the way.

    Default HD 1000cc

In the mid-seventies HD produced a 1000cc sportster, carburated 4 speed. IF they got that out, dusted it off, threw some 21st century technology at it, I would use them instead of the R1 motors I have. The newer 883's are nice motors, and v twins in general have lots of torque, and probably less affected by the weight difference between stock bike weight and FB car weight than the I4's. Just down on power a bit in stock mode.

Yeah, a bit. Different is cool, but don't you want to be at least on the same lap as the guy in second to last place? Refering to the HD stuff, not Twins or V's in general.
