Does anyone know what happened to the base line gearing sheet? When I click on the attachment for this tread I get a really nice track map of the Milwaukee mile? Not what I am looking for..

    Default Road Atlanta?

    Did some searching, but unsuccessful.

Looking for gear suggestions for my first time at Road Atlanta in a Formula F (with Fit power, 29 mm restrictor).

    10/31 R&P, Hoosier tires.

    Thank you.

Default Another request for the new Gingerman layout

Saw a post from last summer but no response. Anyone have any insight into how different the gearing should be for the new Gingerman layout? My particular case is a CF with 9:31 gearing, but I can also extrapolate from other situations as long as I know what the change is from short to long course gearing.

    Thanks,
    Phil

Dunno Phil.... I just registered... you doing the national in a CF on Sunday? I am.. so you should too :-)

Here is a video of the new layout from last year... I've never been on the track, so I can't compare - but maybe take a look at the changes and take a few guesses. I heard longer straight...

    Default Gingerman

I've talked to a couple of people, and it seems that nobody really knows yet. I may just throw Grattan gears in it since I'll be going there two weeks later.

I'm just going to run the regional on Saturday. See you there.

Same question, 5 years later ...

Looking for FF gears for Charlotte.

Or, if I could find out the approximate top speed, that would help.

    TIA.

Update - Received the following email this week:

Many years ago I had an '85 VanDiemen and we ran a lot at Charlotte. With a 10:31 final we had good luck with these:
    1 20-32
    2 21-30
    3 23-29
    4 25-27

    Thanks, Charlie!

    Default Spokane update

With the changes made on the track by the new owners (City of Spokane) prior to last years inaugural SOVREN race weekend, the following gearing is recommended: 18:33, 20:30, 23:28 and 25:26 with a 9:31 ratio. These gears also work very well for Seattle's Pacific Raceway if you're racing vintage or club ford. Some day you should consider SOVREN's NW Historics on July 4th weekend. It's a great 3 day weekend of racing with a FF and CF class of typically of 20-25 cars. This year's weekend begins on June 29th. Come join us.

Saw a request for gearing for ORP but no answers.
We're looking for them as well to save gear swapping time at the track.
Car is a winged air cooled (180HP) SV, 9/31 R&P. Ran unknown gearing, seemed way too high for the low 60's temps. Track never made it above 65 so never got any really hot laps.

    Default Barber?

Planning to head to Barber for the double National in a couple of weeks. No practice day on Friday other than 20 minutes in the morning. Two 15 minute qualifying session in the afternoon.

There is one comment on Barber from quite a while back. Has anyone run at Barber recently that has a pretty good handle on gearing.

    DB6 - Kent.

Just want to be in the ball park.

    Thanks

    Default COTA

OK, let's get this party started.
How about some thoughts on gearing for Austin? I'm guessing about the same as Road America or maybe Willows- throw out first gear, move the rest down and add a taller fourth.

I think Road America gearing will work but, if you try an inside pass at either hairpin you will probably need a stump pulled first.

    Gear COTA same as Atlanta.

Maybe a slightly taller first gear.

And don't forget the loss of power given it'll be warm there, always. I was shocked when I saw the track elevation in person co,pared to pictures.

    Default COTA gears

... I would guess the "old Sebring Hairpin" (as oppose to the current "Saftypin") is very similar to Turns 1 and 11; the Turns 12 and 13 also appear to be 90+ as does 20. I understand the "very wide" track will keeps speed up - that back straighaway is awfully long-- So my guess based upon a 9:31 - low horse (FF) powered car 17/34-18/34-18/33 1st and start w/ a 26/25 4th - fill in w/ correct gaps

    - even-up 4th may be too low out of T11
    - you'll need some torgue multiplication T20 to T1 to climb "Fill/Phil Hill".

    Default MSR-Houston gearing suggestions?

Upon searching this topic, I find a gearing question for MSR-Houston asked, but I don't see any answer(s).

It looks like I may be attending the Feb. 21-24 race at MSR-Houston (2.38 mile, CCW). I have never been there. If anybody could offer recommended gear ratios for Citation 84F, FF (Kent), with 10:31 R&P, 22.5" Dia. rear Hoosier tires, I'd certainly appreciate it.

    Thanks,

You might give James Hepburn a call and pick his brain on gear selection for Mission.

I'll check in my box of gears and see if I have any notes that are apropos to the current track configuration and post tomorrow evening.

    Default First try for Mission

    Thanks for the lead, Trout.

I spoke to a guy who runs regularly at mission (Felim Power) and he says that he and the fast guy at Mission both run:

    1st - 17:34 (2.00:1)
    2nd - 20:32 (1.60:1)
    3rd - 22:30 (1.36:1)
    4th - 23:28 (1.22)

And while I didn't have those precise ratios (except for 1st), I had other ratios which were awfully close and I just decided to use a slightly higher first:

    1st - 16:31 (1.94:1)
    2nd - 18:28 (1.56:1)
    3rd - 20:27 (1.35:1)
    4th - 19:23 (1.21:1)

So I'm within 3% of 1st and even closer for all the other ratios.

My thinking is that if my time in the car is still very limited (total time of about 2 hours in the car), then I'm better off a little high on the gearing to help keep wheel spin under control.

The shafts are assemble and in the carrier and I'll reinstall the whole thing in the main case tomorrow.

I'll report back on how it goes.

Default FF 9:31 r&p gearing for the Ridge

    1st 18:32 or 18:33
    2nd 21:30
    3rd 23:28
    4th 25:27

This worked okay for me but I'm not a front runner and my rpms could have been higher in a few places.
I thought about going a tooth shorter on a couple of gears to get a little better acceleration in one or two spots.
I'd suggest starting with the above and see how it works for you but be prepared to make a change if it isn't floating your boat...
