A majority of the Vintage FVs in the VSCDA are running 12v batteries and generators. Sourcing 12v VW parts is easier and likely cheaper than 6v.

They last multiple seasons, fit the current VW rims and you can use them in wet/dry.

I'd suggest focusing on getting better antennas, commercial handheld radios (Kenwood, Motoral, ect) will have similar max power output of 5watts and have fairly similar range.
