ex Michael Andretti March 87C-DFX
We have recently acquired one of the two chassis used by Michael Andretti during the 87 season while driving for Maury Kraines of Kraco. Michael finished second to Bobby Rahal in the CART championship that year. This car was purchased directly from Kraco in October of 2008 and had been used as the centerpiece of a display in Kraco's trophy room. A letter of provenance from Kraco accompanies the car.
The car is complete except for a battery to power the various lights and instruments. We began the project of bringing it back to life with new master cylinders, etc. In that process, however, we discovered the Cosworth DFX is in need of freshening before it can be raced. I have spoken to Chuck Cornielson at VDS engines about the job. The current owner is upside down after the recent economic downturn and has decided to sell the car to recover his investment and let the new owner get it race ready.
If you would like to own and drive a significant piece of auto racing history, our current economy may work to your advantage. This is your chance to own this impressive car and perhaps race it in the BOSS or USSS for a fraction of what might have been expected only a few months ago. Andretti's March Indy cars
It sometimes amazes me how small a world the racing community truly is. We recently sold this car to a gentleman who plans to vintage race it. The engine is being freshened now and the car is still in our shop. About a month ago, someone else bought the only other Andretti 87C March. Each team always had two cars per driver so that a backup was always on hand. The new owner of the second car had it shipped to us for evaluation and race prep. He too, plans to vintage race the car. For the first time in 24 years both of the 1987 Kraco March entries for Michael Andretti are back under the same roof! I feel very fortunate that the roof is mine. Soon, they may be on the track together. I'll post a photo here later of the two of them side by side.
