Marc Bahner told me to always use aluminum rivets. The nails are the same regardless of body material. His point was that you get more deformation and clamping force with the aluminum ones because they'll pull up more before the nail breaks.
Easier to drill out too.
IMO, aluminum rivets' clamping force is only better under certain conditions if the nail is steel. If you punch out the nail before drilling, then they're easier to drill out. Most, but not all, of my aluminum rivets have aluminum nails (still good to punch out the nail first).
Steel rivets are obviously stronger against shear and tension if the forces are large.
Have you considered monel? Stronger than aluminium but without the corrosion possibility of steel, especially stainless, when used with aluminium.
