1.6 pinto block needed - or whole engine

We are in Brainerd, MN fixing some FF cars for a driving experience. One has a cracked block. It has a pinto 1.6 in it. Need new block or used motor. Also need transmissions - they are from the old volkswagen bugs MK4 or something else that will fit and bolt right in. If you have any, please call Tom.

More information please. Pictures or make, model and year of chassis would help to ID the transmissions (transaxles).

I don't believe the Pinto came in a 1.6 Liter block. That's probably a Kent. And agree we need more information concerning the transaxle.

'70 pinto came with a 1.6 push rod 'kent'.

Yes, many people also call these a Kent motor. These cars don't have aftermarket blocks, they have the old cast ones that were found in 71-73 pintos (and I think later on in Capri and Fiesta).

The Chassis are old Croslee (not sure of the spelling). Any tricks to tell which year chassis?

Crossle FF cars are very well known on this forum, post a few pictures and you will be able to access a world of information.

It's highly unlikely the transmissions are Volkswagen, too. They will be Hewland, which is a bespoke racing gearbox built inside a VW main case. The only thing VW is the case.

I'll try to snap a couple of pictures on Sunday. Would there be any kind of tag or someplace on the car a chassis number or Serial number should be located?

Also, use the Apex search engine for the gearbox. There are plenty MK9s out there for a good value.

Small world! We are 5 miles south of Brainerd.

I know so little about these cars... I was told they have MK4's in them? Is there such a thing? Can they be replaced with an MK9? Was told they spent $10,000 having the trani rebulit the last time?

I'm off to take some pictures. Hope to get them up tonight.

Here's a file explaining all the gearboxes. There are MK4 GBs, but I'm guessing, MK9s were originally used.

$10,000 for a rebuild? I doubt it, although anything is possible when it comes to racecars. I just had a complete rebuild on my LD200, plus REM coating the new crown and pinion for $2500.

Photos will help. Regarding all formula classes (to include vintage FB/F-5000) this site has the largest knowledge base and the most experience. Most importantly, you are among absolutely the best of family here.
