Very sorry you’ve lost your friend, but you’ve done him right here.
Some of the most wonderful people I’ve known in racing matched your description — including a favorite mentor. It seems we forget, in racing and in life, that stresses can run high at the track, on some days, and that we’re all different. I’ve also learned that some harsh people have been disrespected too many times, by people they’d never treat that way, and almost come to expect it from others until they prove themselves of having similar honor to theirs.
He did have some angry posts here, and honestly I sensed something was very wrong in his life. His health might explain that, I totally get it if so, it happens, and it’s too easy and especially in the forum context to judge quickly in not knowing what others might be dealing with.
I spoke with Steve several times at the Runoffs, and while he had on his race face, he reminded me of others like him — and we had nice talks. In fact, I really liked him.
At the Runoffs, I am reasonably sure he won F Production once, or maybe twice, and possibly S2000 in the early ‘80s but think that was a 2nd.
Both cars were black with a big #1 on them, which can be a bad look in many racing cases. But in Steve’s case, it was true, and I hope his suffering was at a minimum.
Race in Peace.
